Dodenherdenking

Dodenherdenking

Remembrance or Memorial Day in The Netherlands is every year held on the 4th of May. Not only the victims of the Second World War, but also all military and civilians who lost there lives during wars, armed conflict and peace-operations after that War, are remembered. From eightteen hundered till sunset the national tri-colour (red, white, blue) is hoisted half-mast and numerous smaller and bigger ceremonies are held all over the country and abroad.

Uniquely, it is closely linked to the next day “5 mei Bevrijdingsdag”, Liberation Day on which not only the regained freedom at the end of the Second World War is celebrated, but also the very importance of freedom, human rights and democracy we may enjoy, is reiterated.

On behalf of the Ambassador of The Netherlands to India, Mr. Bob Hiensch, I cordially invite you to a simple ceremony at the Delhi War Cemetery to commemorate those who died in the struggle for our freedom. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday 4th of May and start at 18.30 hours.

You are kindly requested to arrive 18.15 and be seated 18.20 hours at the lastest.

Military dress is summer ceremonial with medals. Civilians might consider lounge suit (but your presence is much more important than your dress). Children are most welcome.

The ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes and includes a short address by the Defence Attaché, the laying of wreaths, the traditional two minutes silence and the laying of flowers by all who wish to do so (flowers will be available). The ceremony will be supported by the Navy band.

After the ceremony tea, coffee (and limonade) will be served on the premises. Finally, you are kindly requested to consider a small donation for the up-keep of the Delhi War Cemetery.

I very much hope that all you will be able to attend the Ceremony,

The Defence Attaché of The Netherlands to India,
Captain (RNLN) John E. Weyne

The Delhi War Cemetery at Brar Square, Sankracharya Chowk (located approximately 2,5 km from Dhaula Kuan) can be reached by proceeding on the Ring Road from Moti Bagh towards Dhaula Kuan, going straight under the bridge, taking the first U-turn and after that taking the first (passing over the railway line) or second (passing under the railway line) left. After approximately 700 meter (and some curves in the road) the Cemetry will be on your right. A group of staff cars will leave the Embassy compound at 17.50 and proceed to the Cemetery. Alternatively, you could follow these cars in your own car.
